Members of the Acadian Credit Union in Chéticamp, Nova Scotia, will decide this week on whether to maintain their independence. A proposal for a merger with the East Coast Credit Union, along with iNova and Teacher Plus credit unions, aims to establish a provincewide credit union network. While the Acadian Credit Union board endorsed the merger at a recent special meeting, concerns about potential loss of autonomy have surfaced among some members.
Darlene Doucet, a member of the Acadian Credit Union, expressed worries about the merger leading to diminished local control and decision-making. She emphasized the importance of preserving the unique Acadian culture within the credit union. Despite efforts by the East Coast Credit Union to promote the merger’s benefits through a bilingual website, Doucet highlighted ongoing concerns about French language representation.
General manager Lynn Deveau emphasized the necessity for credit unions to enhance their scale and invest in technology to meet evolving member expectations and regulatory demands. Deveau stressed that the decision to pursue the merger was driven by a forward-looking perspective. The voting process on the merger proposal is currently ongoing and is scheduled to conclude on Friday, with the merger anticipated to take effect in the upcoming year.
