A milestone has been reached in the campaign to introduce new publicly-funded MRI services in northeast B.C. The Dawson Creek and District Hospital Foundation has successfully raised $3 million towards acquiring an MRI machine for the city’s upcoming hospital. This development will mark the first publicly-funded MRI service in the Dawson Creek region, aiming to address the challenges faced by patients who currently have to travel long distances and endure extensive waitlists for diagnostic care.
Executive director Kate Hanen highlighted the necessity of having local MRI services, emphasizing the difficulties faced by residents who must travel significant distances to access private MRI facilities in Fort St. John or Prince George. The long travel times can be critical, especially in emergency situations, where immediate access to diagnostic services can be a matter of life or death.
One resident, Rachel Veiner, shared her personal experience of having to fly her son to Vancouver for an MRI following a severe injury. The lack of local MRI services meant delays in diagnosing the extent of his injuries, causing unnecessary pain and anxiety. Veiner stressed the importance of having an MRI facility in Dawson Creek to expedite treatment and reduce the need for transferring patients to distant locations for specialized care.
The initiative to introduce an MRI machine in Dawson Creek received significant support from various stakeholders, including Northern Health, which allocated funds for building a specialized suite for the MRI machine within the city’s hospital. Local contributions from residents, businesses, and government entities played a crucial role in achieving the fundraising goal, with Saddle Hills County making a substantial $300,000 contribution.
Gerry Richard, the reeve of Saddle Hills County, emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in ensuring access to healthcare services for residents across municipal and provincial borders. The successful fundraising efforts have paved the way for establishing a modern healthcare facility in Dawson Creek, equipped with essential services like MRI, which will not only enhance patient care but also reduce wait times and travel burdens for residents in the region.
