The Champagne and Aishihik First Nations in Yukon have experienced a setback in their upcoming general election as the entire election board has resigned, prompting the need for the appointment of a new board. The reasons for the mass resignation remain unclear, and the timeline for establishing a replacement board is uncertain, as the previous board played a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of the election process.
Originally scheduled for October 22, the election has been postponed due to these developments. While a spokesperson for the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations declined to provide further details, the First Nation has committed to sharing regular updates on social media to keep the community informed.
In the upcoming election, incumbent Barbara Joe will be running for chief against Shadelle Chambers, the executive director of the Council of Yukon First Nations. Additionally, voters will have the opportunity to select six councillors to represent them. Notably, the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, with a population exceeding 1,200 citizens, is one of the largest First Nations communities in the Yukon territory.
