The Portuguese Football Federation has suspended Cristiano Ronaldo and launched disciplinary proceedings against him for departing from the national team camp. Ronaldo, aged 41, left during the recent international window following a disagreement with new coach Jorge Jesus regarding playing time. Despite Ronaldo being either unused or absent, Portugal won all three matches, with his replacement Goncalo Ramos scoring three goals.
After the incident, Ronaldo took to Instagram, addressing his 679 million followers, asking the coach to acknowledge his mistake in instructing him to warm up and then not fielding him against Norway. However, Jesus did not admit any wrongdoing. Ronaldo anticipated a suspension under federation regulations but assured his fans of potential farewell matches.
The disciplinary regulations of the federation stipulate that a player who leaves a training session or match without justification may face a suspension of one to six months and a fine. Although Ronaldo informed the federation of his departure, it remains uncertain if his actions will be deemed justified as per the rules.
Acknowledging the need for consequences, Ronaldo stated, “I have already apologized, but I know that actions must have consequences. Anyone in football, like myself, understands that rules apply equally to everyone, irrespective of their status.”
