Kelsey Mitchell’s standout performance of 29 points propelled the Indiana Fever to a 101-95 victory against the Toronto Tempo in a Tuesday showdown. Caitlin Clark, the star player, contributed 24 points and seven assists to Indiana’s fifth consecutive win. Fans at Scotiabank Arena sported Clark jerseys to show their support.
Making a significant return, Brittney Sykes recorded 15 points, five assists, and two rebounds for the Tempo (10-24) after being sidelined for two months due to injury. Despite Marina Mabrey’s 22 points and a notable double-double from Aneesah Morrow with 14 points and 16 rebounds, Toronto suffered its 11th consecutive defeat.
Sykes had been absent from play due to a left plantar fascia injury sustained during a game against the Fever on June 16. Toronto struggled, losing 10 consecutive games without her presence in the lineup. The Tempo, previously contenders for a playoff spot, now hold the third-worst record in the WNBA, ahead of the Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm, who have already been eliminated from postseason contention.
In terms of performance, the Fever, known as the highest-scoring team in the WNBA, lived up to their reputation by scoring 96.2 points per game heading into the match. They excelled in long-range shooting, hitting 11 of 25 three-point attempts (44%) and secured 50 points in the paint. On the other hand, Toronto, despite never leading and trailing by as many as 17 points, showed promise in certain areas. They capitalized on second-chance opportunities with 22 points compared to the Fever’s nine, outrebounded Indiana 41-32, and their bench players contributed 38 points against Indiana’s 20.
A critical moment in the game came when Mabrey sank a three-pointer in the final seconds with Toronto trailing by four, only for the shot to be invalidated by the referees for palming. Notably, Toronto struggled offensively, converting 39.1% of field-goal attempts (34 of 87) and 32.4% from three-point range (12 of 37).
Looking ahead, the Fever will face the Dallas Wings on Thursday, while the Tempo will take on the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
