Residents in Regina have been encountering coyotes not just at the movies but also in local parks this month. Scott Paton, a regular visitor to Les Sherman Park, came across a coyote in mid-August while walking his dogs. Paton described the coyote as more curious than aggressive, getting as close as 10 feet before moving on. He informed others in the park about the sighting, with one woman mentioning that the coyote had been seen in the area for weeks.
Although Paton has not seen the coyote again, he has noticed its droppings in the vicinity. Despite this, he remains unconcerned, stating that coyotes are a common part of the urban landscape. Concerns have been raised by some residents in the Cathedral neighborhood, particularly around Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park, where numerous sightings have been reported since August.
Multiple social media posts describe encounters where the coyote approached people and pets, with one person mentioning being chased and circled by the animal. Reports indicate that the coyote seemed unbothered by attempts to scare it off with loud noises or gestures. Councilor David Froh also had a close encounter with a coyote during his morning run in Les Sherman Park, noting the animal’s comfort around people and pets.
The City of Regina has acknowledged reports of two coyotes in the area and is collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely relocate the animals. Froh emphasized the need for a measured response to persistent wildlife sightings to ensure public safety. Tranquilizing the coyotes for safe removal is the preferred method, avoiding the use of firearms within the city limits.
Froh reassured residents that while coyote sightings can be disconcerting, they are not uncommon in Regina. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of both pets and wildlife in managing such encounters. In light of these sightings, residents are encouraged to report any sightings of coyotes or other potentially risky wildlife to the authorities for proper handling.
The film “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently being screened in various theaters in Regina. Froh advised the public to report real-life encounters with coyotes and other wild animals that may pose a safety threat to the City of Regina.
