Flight attendants working on Air Canada Express flights are currently in the process of voting on whether to authorize a strike due to stalled bargaining talks, as reported by their union. The Canadian Flight Attendant Union, representing approximately 1,000 flight attendants, has expressed the need for a strike mandate after unsuccessful negotiations with Jazz Aviation over crucial issues following nine months of discussions and mediation involvement.
In response, a spokesperson for Jazz Aviation stated the company’s commitment to reaching a resolution at the bargaining table without any disruptions to its operations. The company is now looking to appoint a conciliation officer as negotiations with the Canadian Flight Attendant Union have hit a deadlock.
One of the key concerns highlighted by the union is the disparity in pay compared to other Canadian airlines and the recent industry agreements. Additionally, issues such as ground work compensation and improvements to acknowledge the job’s impact on members’ lives remain unresolved. The union is seeking recognition for its members as safety professionals for the various tasks they perform in ensuring passenger safety.
Safety concerns were emphasized following a tragic incident involving Air Canada Express Flight AC8646 at LaGuardia Airport earlier this year, which claimed the lives of both pilots. The union stresses the importance of fair working conditions, adequate rest, and respect for flight attendants responsible for passenger safety daily.
Voting on the strike mandate is set to conclude on Friday at noon. This vote follows recent strikes by WestJet flight attendants and Air Canada flight attendants. The potential timing of a strike by Air Canada Express flight attendants, if the vote leans towards strike authorization, remains uncertain.
