Visitors to the Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Centre in Vanderhoof, B.C., have the unique opportunity to witness the endangered prehistoric white sturgeon up close. The hatchery, established in 2014, is dedicated to the preservation of this ancient species, which has faced a significant decline in population due to environmental changes and habitat pressures.
During the summer months, the centre offers daily tours where guests can observe the prehistoric white sturgeon and learn about the conservation efforts in place. The Nechako white sturgeon, existing for millions of years relatively unchanged, now has only around 550 adult fish left in the wild.
The reasons behind the sturgeon’s decline are under study, with factors such as overfishing before a ban in 1994, pollution, landscape alterations in the Nechako River due to construction, and changes in water flows post the Kenney Dam construction in the 1950s being potential causes. If left unaided, the species faces the risk of extinction.
Staff at the hatchery rear the sturgeon in large tanks using specialized equipment and recirculated water from the Nechako River until the fish are mature enough to be released into their natural habitat. The tours conducted by the centre not only raise awareness but also provide insight into a species rarely seen in the wild.
The hatchery attracts 2-3,000 visitors annually, with a peak in summer when tourists from various parts of the world visit to witness the conservation efforts. High school and university students also actively participate in research and public education programs at the hatchery, contributing to the preservation of the Nechako white sturgeon.
Penelope Roberge, a local student who has worked at the hatchery for four summers, emphasizes the importance of educating the public about sturgeon conservation. Site manager Jake Zimich highlights the necessity of public awareness to ensure the survival and natural reproduction of the Nechako white sturgeon.
