In Quebec, discussions often revolve around the concept of Quebec identity, known as lâidentité Québécoise in French. However, the interpretation and definition of this term vary depending on who you ask. With the upcoming provincial election on Oct. 5, I engaged with a diverse group of Quebec residents to gather their unique perspectives.
During my conversations, I had the opportunity to speak with individuals from different backgrounds. Two women shared their experiences of immigrating to Quebec from India and Pakistan in the 1970s under René Lévesque’s reign. I also met younger individuals, one with Indigenous heritage and the other with Maghrebi roots, who are supporters of Quebec sovereignty.
Additionally, I connected with a Montreal resident who distinguishes herself as a Montrealer rather than a Quebecer, along with two other individuals who navigate their pride in Quebec while advocating for English-language institutions.
Here are some insights gleaned from these discussions.
Krishnavi Sivanesan, hailing from Sri Lanka, has dedicated herself to preserving her Tamil heritage in Montreal. While understanding Quebec’s efforts to safeguard French culture, she believes immigrants are unfairly targeted for the decline of the French language.
Understanding the Importance of French from a Trilingual Tamil Resident
Krishnavi Sivanesan, a 25-year-old Montreal native, spends her weekends teaching Tamil to younger individuals, who often converse in French during their sessions. Having fled Sri Lanka due to ethnic conflict, Sivanesan appreciates Quebec’s commitment to preserving the French language.
However, she feels that the current discourse on non-Francophone residents and immigrants fails to acknowledge the contributions made by her community.
