A teenage boy, aged 16, faces charges of second-degree murder following the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl in the Hairsine neighborhood of Edmonton. Due to being a minor, the accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act regulations.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) responded to reports of a shooting at 139th Avenue and 32nd Street around 6:50 a.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, officers discovered a critically wounded 16-year-old girl. Despite efforts to administer first aid, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A subsequent autopsy confirmed the girl’s death as a homicide caused by a gunshot wound, as stated in a news release by the police on Wednesday. Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey from the EPS Homicide Section expressed condolences to the affected families, friends, and community members, emphasizing the tragic nature of such incidents involving young individuals.
The EPS stressed the ongoing nature of their investigation into the homicide, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts among families, schools, community groups, and law enforcement to prevent youth violence and its dire consequences.
