In a statement shared on her Instagram account, Bettina Trump expressed gratitude towards Umar Kremlev, describing him as a “dear friend” who generously hosted two nights of post-wedding celebrations. ProPublica, an investigative platform, revealed that Kremlev, a Russian oligarch heading the International Boxing Association, substantially financed the Bahamas wedding between Trump Jr. and socialite Bettina Anderson. Kremlev reportedly covered extensive costs, including renting out a private island for the festivities and organizing a fireworks display.
The couple clarified that their actual wedding took place privately, solely in the presence of family members. The subsequent weekend was initially planned as a social gathering with friends, not as the official wedding event. They emphasized that the shift in wedding plans led to their decision to marry before the scheduled weekend, which was coincidentally already arranged. Bettina Trump lamented the politicization and negative portrayal of their personal celebration due to their identities and backgrounds, asserting that genuine friendships and gestures of generosity should not be misconstrued for ulterior motives.
Umar Kremlev was recently honored by Putin with the Order of Friendship amidst Russia’s ongoing conflict following the Ukraine invasion and the lack of progress in peace negotiations. Trump Jr.’s past connections to Russia have drawn scrutiny, particularly his meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya at Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign. The meeting raised suspicions of potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in influencing the election outcome, as it was purportedly aimed at obtaining damaging information about Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Democratic candidate at the time.
