A labor union representing workers at a pulp mill in British Columbia is pleased with the news that a previously closed facility in Howe Sound is scheduled to resume operations later this month. Unifor has indicated that an agreement between the province and the operator, Domtar, has positioned the mill for reopening pending the ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement by members next week. Domtar had announced in August the indefinite closure of the Howe Sound Pulp and Paper mill due to declining demand, low prices, and insufficient fiber supply.
Lana Payne, the national president of Unifor, expressed enthusiasm for the reopening, describing it as “fantastic news” for both members and the local community on the Sunshine Coast. She commended the “close cooperation” among the government, workers, and industry in sustaining and revitalizing the sector. The Truck Loggers Association has also shown optimism about the forthcoming restart of operations at the Port Mellon mill later this month.
