In eastern Newfoundland, a farmer is honing his skills at cultivating huge gourds, aiming to surpass his previous record set four years ago. In 2022, Leslee Lake, an organic farmer from Clarenville, grew a massive pumpkin named Gourdzilla weighing 1,034 pounds. This year, another pumpkin named Pothole is anticipated to exceed that weight with current estimates placing it at 996 pounds, expected to reach 1,200 pounds before harvest.
Lake’s dedication to Pothole’s growth is evident, with daily weight gains and meticulous care. Despite facing challenges like suboptimal weather conditions, including using unconventional methods like blankets and heating pads, Lake remains committed to nurturing his prized pumpkin. Lake’s innovative approaches include soil management, custom fertilizers, and careful selection of seed genetics, all contributing to his success in growing impressive pumpkins.
Although Lake has triumphed with Pothole, other growers have faced setbacks this year, leading to the cancellation of Clarenville’s Giant Pumpkin Festival for 2026. Lake plans to showcase Pothole post-harvest, encouraging donations for charity, showcasing his dedication to community involvement. Reflecting on the challenging growing season affecting other produce like grapes, Lake acknowledges the impact of cold and damp conditions, highlighting the uniqueness of this year’s agricultural experience.
As Lake continues his farming endeavors, adapting to varying climate conditions and employing innovative techniques, his dedication to cultivating exceptional pumpkins remains unwavering. His success story serves as an inspiration to fellow growers, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and adaptability in agriculture.
