The Spaniel’s Tale, a bookstore in Ottawa, recently relocated to a bigger venue nearby, without initially planning a “book brigade.” Co-owner Cole Davidson credited the concept to loyal customers who shared stories of other bookstores employing similar tactics in the past.
The book brigade involved volunteers forming a human chain to pass books one by one from the old location on Carruthers Avenue to the new site on Stirling Avenue in Hintonburg. The event lasted from noon to 2:30 p.m. on a Saturday, with approximately 80 to 90 meters of ground covered by two lines of volunteers.
Davidson expressed gratitude for the community’s overwhelming support, emphasizing the significance of their presence during the transition. Participants of all ages, including young contributors such as 12-year-old Harry Turk-Misener, joined in to help relocate thousands of books.
Josae St Laurent, a supporter of local businesses, highlighted the importance of rallying together for neighborhood initiatives like this. Ashley Graham, another volunteer, praised The Spaniel’s Tale for its community contributions and commitment to Canadian authors.
The successful relocation effort saw over 280 volunteers moving around 7,400 books to the new store, which boasts twice the space of the previous location. Davidson mentioned plans for expanded offerings and upcoming events at the new venue, anticipating a grand opening on October 17.
