A tragic incident occurred on the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a driver following a head-on collision involving two SUVs. Yukon RCMP confirmed receiving a report of the crash between the Crestview area and Cousins airstrip just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Sadly, one of the drivers succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while the other was taken for medical treatment, according to the police statement. Yukon RCMP expressed their condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
The collision, which occurred south of the North Klondike Highway junction, prompted the closure of the highway by the RCMP. Approximately an hour and a half later, a single lane was reopened for traffic flow.
Emergency services, the fire department, and the territorial Department of Highways and Public Works, in collaboration with the Whitehorse RCMP, swiftly responded to the crash site. Yukon Protective Services later confirmed that the highway had been cleared by 10 p.m. on Tuesday, with traffic returning to normal.
A collision reconstructionist examined the scene, revealing that a black 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and a maroon 2000 GMC Jimmy were the vehicles involved in the incident, as per the RCMP’s report.
An investigation is currently underway, with the police actively seeking additional witnesses. In particular, authorities are eager to speak with an individual who was present at the scene before the arrival of the RCMP and left before officers could gather information. This person may have interacted with other witnesses and could provide valuable insights, hence the RCMP’s appeal for them to come forward with any information or dashcam footage that could aid in the investigation.
