FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, will seek re-election, according to the global soccer governing body. Infantino has been under mounting scrutiny for his unsuccessful proposal to divest shares in the World Cup. Despite widespread demands for him to resign, FIFA confirmed that Infantino will pursue a fourth and final term in office until 2031.
In an announcement, a FIFA spokesperson reiterated Infantino’s intention to run for re-election in 2027, stating that there have been no changes to this plan. UEFA, the European soccer authority, has spearheaded the campaign for Infantino’s exit, expressing a lack of confidence in him and previously hinting at a potential boycott of FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. Several national associations, such as the English FA, have also withdrawn their backing for Infantino’s re-election bid.
Infantino declined to comment on his future during the commencement of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on Saturday. FIFA has acknowledged mistakes in its controversial scheme to commercialize profits from the World Cup and pledged to prevent such errors from recurring. However, these actions have not alleviated the pressure on Infantino’s leadership.
The deadline for candidates to enter the upcoming presidential race is November 18, precisely four months prior to the vote.
