Tim Curry, the distinctive British actor renowned for his portrayal of idiosyncratic characters such as the flamboyant, eccentric mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” has passed away at the age of 80.
According to his longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz, Curry passed away at his residence in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, although initial reports indicated Wednesday. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Following a stroke in 2012, Curry had been reliant on a wheelchair.
Curry rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead in the horror-comedy stage musical “The Rocky Horror Show,” later reprising his role in the 1975 film adaptation “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
Known for his portrayals of sinister, eccentric villains, Curry embodied characters like Pennywise the clown in the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s “It” and Rooster Hannigan in the 1982 film “Annie,” alongside Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan.
In addition to his reputation for mischievous humor and expressive facial expressions, Curry lent his voice to various animated children’s projects including “The Rugrats Movie” (1998), “The Pebble and the Penguin” (1995), “Rugrats in Paris” (2000), and “The Wild Thornberrys Movie” (2002).
His stage performances earned him three Tony nominations for “Spamalot,” “My Favourite Year,” and the titular role in “Amadeus,” as well as an Emmy nomination in 1994 for a guest appearance on “Tales from the Crypt.”
Describing Curry’s versatile career, his PR manager Sean Katz highlighted his ability to seamlessly transition between genres, noting his refusal to be confined by expectations. Katz emphasized Curry’s open-mindedness and kind-hearted nature as enduring qualities throughout his life.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans following Curry’s passing. Carol Burnett remembered her “Annie” co-star as a dear friend and praised his talent for portraying lovable villains. Actor and comedian Rob Schneider expressed his sorrow over the loss of his “Home Alone 2” co-star, praising Curry’s exceptional stage and screen performances. The official Instagram page for “The Rocky Horror Show” paid homage to Curry as the original interpreter of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, acknowledging his iconic contribution to the role.
