The Israeli government is issuing a warning to escalate “targeted strikes” on Gaza unless Hamas intervenes to stop the use of kites by Palestinians, including children, flying into Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on a social media platform X, mentioned that he and Defense Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” to address the concern of drones, balloons, and kites being launched from Gaza towards Israel. The meeting was attended by Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the head of the National Security Council, and senior officials of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel has cautioned Hamas that if the launches persist, the IDF will intensify targeted strikes against those responsible for the launches and will clear the population from areas used as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons.
“We will not tolerate any threats to our communities from Hamas or any other group in Gaza, jeopardizing our citizens’ security,” Netanyahu stated.
Meanwhile, a 13-year-old named Omar Halawa finds solace in flying kites along the shore in Khan Younis amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. He expressed that flying kites brings some joy as there is little else in Gaza to uplift spirits.
Omar disclosed that he crafts kites himself, including adding fringes and tails, and is aware of the warnings issued by Netanyahu against kite flyers. He emphasized that they are children who do not engage in violence and only seek to live peacefully.
In the lead-up to the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on southern Israel, Israel reported incidents of burning kites and balloons launched from Gaza causing fires and damage. Recently, several kites were discovered near a kibbutz close to Gaza, with no dangerous materials attached.
Netanyahu’s latest stance follows Israeli strikes and tank fire that resulted in casualties, including children. The strikes targeted various locations, leading to fatalities and injuries. The conflict has seen significant loss of life on both sides, with ongoing tensions and concerns about further escalation.
Hamas responded to Netanyahu’s statements by accusing Israel of aggression and disregarding international law. The group called for condemnation of Israel’s actions and urged mediators to push for a genuine ceasefire in Gaza.
Omar expressed fear about flying kites amidst the escalating situation, fearing for his safety and the safety of those around him. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, highlighted the challenges her son faces and the importance of simple joys like flying a kite.
As evening fell, the children continued flying kites near their tents, adapting to the changing circumstances in the region.
