In a Kamloops courtroom, a disturbing account of a homicide unfolded involving Scott Keith McDonald, aged 39, who stands accused of second-degree murder in the death of 66-year-old Jo Ann Jackson, his neighbor in Sicamous, B.C. The tragic incident occurred on June 19, 2024, when Jackson was discovered unresponsive in McDonald’s driveway. Surveillance footage from McDonald’s security camera captured the violent attack during the early hours in their shared trailer park community.
During the trial’s commencement on Monday, the court was presented with video evidence depicting the sequence of events. The altercation began when Jackson knocked on McDonald’s door to request a reduction in his music’s volume, leading to a brutal assault where McDonald physically assaulted Jackson and used a hose to force water into her mouth, resembling a form of waterboarding.
Throughout the proceedings, a neighbor who witnessed the assault testified on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, forensic pathologist Dr. Farshaad Bilimoria provided expert testimony. Dr. Bilimoria’s autopsy report revealed that the victim’s demise resulted from a combination of injuries, including blunt force trauma and fatal asphyxiation due to pressure on her neck and the waterboarding incident.
During the neighbor’s testimony on Tuesday, Erwin Nehring recounted observing McDonald repeatedly striking Jackson with his fists through his kitchen window at approximately 3:15 a.m. Nehring also mentioned observing the accused consuming beer for most of the preceding day but could not ascertain the quantity consumed or McDonald’s level of intoxication during the assault.
McDonald acknowledges his role in Jackson’s death but asserts that he should be deemed not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder or extreme intoxication impairing his intent, as per his defense. The trial, overseen by a judge without a jury, is anticipated to span three weeks, with proceedings set to resume the following Monday.
