In the aftermath of recent catastrophic floods in Nepal that left roads and bridges in ruins and helicopters occupied with search and rescue efforts, the Nepali army has resorted to utilizing drones for delivering aid to displaced individuals. The calamity, triggered by a Himalayan glacier detachment near the Nepal-China boundary in late August, has resulted in the confirmed death of at least 1,367 people, with over 5,000 individuals reported missing.
To address the pressing need for food, essentials, medicine, and fuel delivery to affected populations, drone pilots like Santosh Budhathoki, contracted by the Nepal army, emphasize the significance of prioritizing drone technology due to the limited availability of helicopters for such tasks. Drones have proven effective in transporting relief supplies over distances ranging from three to four kilometers, with a capacity to carry up to 60 kilograms per trip, providing critical aid to communities in distress.
With a fleet of four DJI FlyCart 100 drones, generously provided by China as part of an aid package, the army is conducting approximately 10 to 16 aid missions daily. Apart from delivering supplies, drones have been instrumental in the transportation of flood victims’ remains and have played a vital role in reconnaissance and search and rescue operations in severely impacted areas.

The swift and agile nature of drones has significantly aided in expediting relief efforts amidst the demanding circumstances, making them a valuable asset in the ongoing disaster response operations.
