“Seniors College of P.E.I. Launches Diverse Classes”

Published:

Fall marks the season when many residents of Prince Edward Island prepare to return to their studies, including children, teenagers, and seniors. The Seniors College of P.E.I. has launched its website featuring a diverse selection of approximately 140 classes ranging from art and fitness to dance and finance. Individuals aged 50 and above can enroll in as many classes as they wish by paying a registration fee of $170 for the year.

Monique Lafontaine, a participant and instructor at the seniors college, shared with host Mitch Cormier of Island Morning that the course offerings are so extensive that she often finds herself signing up for multiple classes. Beyond acquiring new knowledge, Lafontaine highlighted the social aspect of joining the college, emphasizing the opportunity to meet individuals from different backgrounds.

The college’s courses do not involve grading, creating a pressure-free learning environment. Classes are in high demand, with waiting lists common. Participants can easily opt out of a class that doesn’t suit them, allowing others to take their place. The academic year runs from October to May, with a break during the summer to enjoy the Island’s warm weather.

Registration for classes commences on September 2 at 9 a.m. Due to the popularity of certain courses, it is advisable to pay the registration fee early to secure a spot. Lafontaine likened the class selection process to a buffet, with offerings such as LovDogs 101 and Brews and Bubblies, providing insights into dog care and various beverages, respectively.

The college fosters a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere where the focus is on learning and socializing rather than competition. Lafontaine underscored the supportive community within the college, where everyone shares a common goal of personal growth and connecting with others.

One of the unique classes offered is Suddenly Single, designed to assist individuals in navigating the challenges that arise after the loss of a partner or spouse. Lafontaine, who is currently experiencing this situation, emphasized the emotional toll and overwhelming responsibilities that come with such a loss. The course aims to provide guidance and support from experts to help individuals cope with this difficult transition.
