The proprietor of a historic adult entertainment establishment in the heart of Toronto expressed deep distress following a fire incident at the commercial premises on Sunday morning. Emergency responders arrived at the Zanzibar Tavern, an adult entertainment nightclub located near Yonge Street and Elm Street, after reports of smoke emerged around 6 a.m., as confirmed by Toronto Fire to CBC News.
Upon arrival, firefighters identified significant black smoke and a blaze at the roof level of the building, eventually escalating to a 3-alarm fire. Fortunately, there were no individuals inside the building at the time, and there have been no reported injuries. The structure’s roof and interior areas have suffered damage, according to Toronto Fire officials.
The owner, Allen Cooper, expressed his devastation and mentioned his hopes of reopening the establishment in an improved state following necessary repairs. Cooper, a second-generation owner of Zanzibar, acknowledged the significant damage incurred and emphasized his desire to enhance the business post-restoration. He revealed that the club, established by his parents in 1960, holds sentimental value to him.
Despite the setback, Cooper highlighted the resilience of his employees and expressed gratitude that nobody was harmed during the incident. Firefighters reassured him of minimal structural damage to the building, although a comprehensive assessment is pending. Nearby business owner Rafi Whedy, whose store suffered minor damage due to the fire, anticipates a swift reopening once repairs are completed.
During a press briefing, Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop provided insights into the extensive damage caused by the fire. The investigation into the fire’s origin is ongoing, with no indications of suspicious activities detected thus far. Jessop commended the swift and effective response of the Toronto Fire Service in containing the blaze, preventing further destruction amidst the close proximity of neighboring structures.
Despite partial roof collapse and deep-seated fire challenges, no injuries were reported, ensuring the safety of individuals in the vicinity. Whedy, the adjacent business proprietor, remains optimistic about resuming operations promptly following necessary repairs.
