“Record-Warm El Niño Confirmed, Potential for ‘Super’ Event”

The highly anticipated El Niño has arrived, and it is already proving to be as expected. Earlier in the spring, climate experts predicted the formation of an El Niño in the central Pacific region. Over time, more models indicated the likelihood of a strong or “super” El Niño, but scientists cautioned that certainty was premature.

In June, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed the onset of warmer conditions in the specific area of the Pacific Ocean known as Niño 3.4. For an El Niño to be recognized, temperatures in this zone must exceed the average by 0.5 C. Currently, ocean temperatures are nearly 2 C above average, marking a record warmth for this time of year.

Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, highlighted that temperatures in the Nino 3.4 region are surpassing 2 C, indicating the potential for a very strong or “super” El Niño. It is only early July, yet conditions are already approaching those of a powerful El Niño.

El Niño and La Niña are part of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle in the Pacific Ocean. La Niña brings cooler temperatures, while El Niño brings warmer conditions. Forecasts suggest that the El Niño may peak in October, though some models suggest November or December as more likely peak months.

The strongest El Niño in recent years occurred in 2015-2016, with ocean temperatures anomaly reaching around 2.75 C. The rapid transition from La Niña to El Niño this year has been notable, with meteorologists observing significant changes over just one year.

Hausfather expressed surprise at models predicting a peak of around 3.6 C, surpassing historical El Niño records. The influence of climate change on these extreme conditions remains uncertain, with ongoing scientific discussions.

Impacts of the current El Niño on food security in tropical regions and wildfire risks in Western Canada are among the concerns raised by experts. The effects of El Niño are expected to manifest in different ways globally, underlining the significance of preparing for potential consequences.
