“Deadly Glacier Avalanche in Nepal Sparks Climate Change Concerns”

Geoscientist Jakob Steiner described the recent event in Nepal’s Himalayan region as resembling a massive section of a glacier being cut away and dropped from a mountain cliff. The resulting ice, rock, and sediment avalanche traveled 1.2 km down from a 5,000-meter altitude, forming a temporary dam that created a lake below. Subsequent breach of the dam unleashed a violent torrent that devastated villages downstream.

The calamity has claimed the lives of at least 579 individuals, with 1,400 others missing in Nepal, including 32 Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Indigenous communities have long referred to the mountain, Langtang Lirung, as an “angry mountain,” a warning that has tragically proven true once again.

While some climate scientists are cautious about directly attributing this event solely to human-induced climate change, experts specializing in glacier hydrology and the impacts of global warming on the cryosphere have long warned about such catastrophic events, particularly in the Himalayas.

The tragedy underscores the urgent need for global action to address climate change and prevent future disasters. The incident in Nepal serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of environmental degradation and the importance of proactive measures to mitigate climate-related risks.
