Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime exited the U.S. Open on Wednesday after losing in four sets to Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the second round. Auger-Aliassime, the No. 3 seed from Montreal, clinched the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (5) but then went on to lose the next three sets with scores of 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Khachanov, ranked 50th globally, managed to break Auger-Aliassime’s serve seven times on the Louis Armstrong Stadium court and saved seven of the nine break points he faced. This win marked only Khachanov’s second top-10 victory at a Grand Slam event.
Despite Auger-Aliassime initially taking a 3-0 lead in the first set, he struggled with errors, allowing Khachanov to turn the match around. Khachanov dominated the following sets, securing a lead that Auger-Aliassime couldn’t recover from, resulting in a defeat for the Canadian player.
Next, Khachanov will face either Benjamin Bonzi from France or the 32nd seed Ignacio Buse from Peru in his upcoming match. The U.S. Open also saw notable wins from players like Aryna Sabalenka, Naomi Osaka, and Coco Gauff, while Alexander Zverev faced a tough battle but managed to advance to the next round after a five-set victory. Doubles matches commenced, with Serena and Venus Williams set to play their first-round match.
