Four years following the passing of a young woman who became a symbol of the struggle for women’s rights and liberty in Iran, Amnesty International reports that the subsequent government crackdown was a systematic effort by perpetrators who have yet to face consequences.
Mahsa Amini, aged 22, passed away on September 16, 2022, after being detained by Iran’s morality police for her clothing deemed “inappropriate.”
According to the recent Amnesty report, based on 270 interviews, over 2,000 videos, and substantial documentary evidence, the same officials responsible for past violent crackdowns are still leading oppressive actions today. The report identifies numerous officials allegedly involved in what is described as crimes against humanity.
The authors of the report are urging for global intervention to prevent a recurrence of the lethal crackdowns that have persisted for years, emphasizing the need to halt the normalization of mass protest killings in Iran.
Mahsa Piraei, whose mother was killed by security forces during the 2022 uprising, stressed the importance of holding all responsible individuals accountable, asserting that her mother’s death was a result of a systemic issue overseen by high-ranking authorities.
The Amnesty report highlights the targeting of minority groups, particularly Kurdish and Baluchi communities, during the 2022 protests. These communities, practicing Sunni Islam in a predominantly Shia country, faced disproportionate violence from Iranian authorities.
As tensions escalate with the U.S. and Israel declaring war on Iran, Amnesty warns against using human rights abuses to justify military actions, emphasizing the need to address rights violations separately from military interventions.
Amnesty International’s report documents 377 deaths during the 2022 protests, including 56 children, with most casualties attributed to security forces’ actions. The organization calls for criminal investigations into 87 officials implicated in the crimes against humanity.
