Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani secured a spot in the Round of 16 in the U.S. Open women’s doubles tournament by defeating Italy’s Sara Errani and Austria’s Lilli Tagger 6-2, 7-5 in New York. Dabrowski, the second seed from Ottawa, and Stefani capitalized on five out of eight break points and saved four of their opponents’ six breakpoint opportunities during the one hour and 27-minute match.
Having previously won the U.S. Open doubles title twice in 2023 and 2025, Dabrowski and Stefani will face Japan’s Eri Hozumi and Slovenia’s Andreja Klepac in the next round. Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen were not as fortunate, losing 6-4, 6-4 to New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe and Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi in their second-round match.
Fernandez and Tjen struggled to convert their breakpoint chances, managing only one out of six, while the ninth-seeded Routliffe and Sutjiadi broke serve three times out of five opportunities. Fernandez also faced elimination in the third round of the women’s singles competition at the hands of third-seeded American Jessica Pegula.
In other matches, Alexander Zverev progressed in the tournament with a comfortable victory over Alejandro Tabilo, while Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round. Naomi Osaka overcame Elise Mertens in a challenging three-set match, showcasing her mental and physical resilience.
Young talents Iva Jovic and Alexandra Eala delivered an enthralling battle, with Jovic emerging victorious. Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek continued their strong performances, moving closer to major success. However, it was a tough day for American players as several, including Taylor Fritz, Madison Keys, and Amanda Anisimova, exited the tournament. Despite the setbacks, Learner Tien provided a bright moment for the home crowd with a hard-fought win over Czech Jakub Mensik.
