Arinn Young showcased an outstanding performance, contributing 23 points, six rebounds, and nine assists to lead Team Canada to an undefeated streak with an 80-37 victory over Brazil in Group A competition at the wheelchair basketball world championships held at TD Place in Ottawa on Sunday.
Canada’s bench players, Cindy Ouellet and Elise Froese, also made significant contributions with 15 points each, helping Canada secure a 4-0 record in the tournament. Geisa Vieira led the scoring for Brazil with eight points.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Canadian veteran Élodie Tessier emphasized the collective effort, stating, “It was really a team win. Coming off such an emotional game against China can sometimes alleviate pressure for the next one.”
Canada started the game strongly, establishing a commanding 19-4 lead after the first quarter and maintaining control throughout the match. Despite being outrebounded 33-31, Canada displayed impressive shooting accuracy at 56%, held a 26-14 advantage in assists, and forced Brazil into committing 28 turnovers while only committing nine.
Elise Froese, who also secured five rebounds, commended the team’s adaptability and unity, stating, “We identified our threats quickly and worked together as a team better than we have before. The excitement and energy going into the game were palpable, and the result was exactly what we aimed for.”
