U.S. President Donald Trump’s press secretary Katie Zacharia is stepping down from her position just a week after assuming office, a White House official informed CBC News. The announcement came shortly after Trump hinted at Zacharia’s potential departure. Trump mentioned that he had a conversation with Zacharia and expressed his belief that she did not deserve the negative media attention she received.
During a press briefing before leaving for a rally in Georgia, Trump shared, “I advised her to seek happiness. I want her to have a fulfilling life, not endure what she has faced in the past few days.” The president indicated that a final decision about Zacharia’s future would be made after his campaign travel. He stated, “We will discuss it upon my return.”
Trump also empathized with Zacharia, stating that she had been unfairly treated and criticized by the media. Zacharia’s brief tenure was marked by scrutiny over her professional background and her handling of questions from journalists. Notably, she faced challenges during her initial briefing, where she struggled to deliver smooth remarks and only engaged with a few reporters before concluding the session abruptly.
Zacharia’s appointment on October 9 as the successor to Karoline Leavitt, the youngest press secretary in White House history, raised eyebrows. She faced further scrutiny for her limited press interactions and her decision to keep briefings short. Despite these challenges, Zacharia expressed her commitment to gaining trust and confidence among her colleagues.
Prior to her role as press secretary, Zacharia worked in communications at Trump Media and briefly served in the Department of Homeland Security during the previous Trump administration. Her assertion of being a lawyer drew attention, with questions arising about her legal credentials, especially regarding her past legal work in China.
Zacharia clarified that she considered herself a lawyer based on her legal analysis contributions on conservative media platforms and her professional experience. Trump emphasized that Zacharia was hired as a spokesperson for the White House, not as legal counsel. Zacharia’s performance and background continue to be scrutinized as she transitions from her short-lived role as press secretary.
