Vancouver police conducted a press briefing on Thursday to emphasize a downward trend in long-term crime data. Deputy Chief Howard Chow of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) highlighted the importance of factual information regarding city crime. He stated, “I am here to discuss our crime statistics, provide an overview of the current situation in Vancouver, and assure everyone that Vancouver is now safer than ever before.”
According to CBC’s Justin McElroy, the police highlighted a decrease in crime rates over the past 25 years, urging the public to consider a broader perspective on the matter. Despite recent years focusing more on public perceptions of crime rather than statistical data, the department underscored the positive trend in crime reduction.
The timing of the briefing, just nine days before the upcoming municipal election on October 17, has sparked curiosity about the motives behind the announcement.
