Geoff Burrow, the father of the late rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has passed away, as confirmed recently. Geoff played a significant role in the notable awareness and fundraising efforts that were initiated following Rob’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Leeds Rhinos expressed deep sorrow at the news of Geoff Burrow’s passing on March 30th after a period of declining health. Geoff, a native of Leeds, dedicated himself to advocating for the MND community after Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019, continuing his efforts even after Rob’s passing in June 2024.
Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to his first rugby game at Headingley, sparking Rob’s love for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff championed for those without a voice.
The club extended its heartfelt condolences to Geoff’s wife Irene and the entire Burrow family during this difficult time, requesting privacy for the family to grieve. May Geoff rest in peace.
Rob Burrow, a beloved figure in Leeds, was diagnosed with MND in late 2019 and sadly passed away in June 2024. He tirelessly campaigned, supported by his family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, who undertook various physical challenges to raise funds.
Their joint efforts led to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. The center, costing £6.8 million, was inaugurated in November 2025, following groundbreaking shortly after Rob’s demise.
Expressing gratitude for the fundraising, Geoff emphasized that the contributions benefited not only MND sufferers and their families but also the dedicated staff, whom he referred to as angels.
Geoff played a crucial role in caring for Rob and his children, allowing Rob’s wife Lindsey to continue working as an NHS physiotherapist. Reflecting on Rob’s peaceful passing in hospital, Geoff recalled the poignant moment when Rob smiled, encouraging his family to stay strong.
Messages of love and support poured in from rugby league clubs, with Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens expressing condolences and solidarity with the Burrow family during this challenging period.
