“Alt-Nets Outshine Major Broadband Providers in UK”

Published:

A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations in terms of service reliability. The report highlights that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value for money.

The study found that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are common among broadband users. Slow download speeds and service outages were also significant sources of frustration for consumers.

A striking 91% of broadband customers reported experiencing problems with their service in the past year, indicating that only a small fraction of households had trouble-free connections.

Among the prominent providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, affecting 38% of its customers. Virgin Media also performed poorly, with 30% of users encountering regular connection issues despite paying premium prices for broadband services.

Moreover, Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with slow broadband speeds, with nearly one in three customers feeling that their connection was not fast enough. TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received negative feedback from customers.

On a positive note, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for their superior performance and fewer reliability issues compared to major brands. Among the larger providers, Plusnet stood out for delivering better service than competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

These findings align with previous research from Which? that consistently shows smaller broadband firms outperforming major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized the importance of quality broadband as an essential service and urged consumers to consider switching to alternative providers if they are dissatisfied with their current service.

In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media highlighted the company’s ongoing investments in improving services and cited positive independent data that ranks Virgin Media as a top performer across various broadband categories.

Which? advises households to explore alternative providers in their area and make informed decisions about switching providers to access better broadband services. The organization also recommends using Ofcom’s broadband checker tool to compare available networks.
