This act could be invoked due to the ongoing unrest in Minnesota, which may necessitate military intervention. However, the prospect of Trump utilizing the military against American citizens marks a significant escalation. The Act has been previously activated by past Presidents like George W Bush during the 1992 LA riots and Lyndon B Johnson in response to riots in Detroit and unrest after Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the need to enforce the law against alleged professional agitators targeting ICE personnel in Minnesota. He warned of invoking the Insurrection Act if local officials fail to address the situation, citing historical precedent set by former Presidents.
Trump’s claims of orchestrated protests against ICE operations in Minnesota have been unsubstantiated, aligning with his administration’s narrative of coordinated dissent orchestrated by “radical leftist” groups. The Department of Homeland Security’s actions in arresting over 2,000 individuals in Minnesota since December have faced criticism for targeting lawful protesters.

The tension escalated following a recent incident where a federal immigration officer shot a Minneapolis man, leading to heightened fear and anger in the city.
