Donald Trump remains firm in his unusual request for the United States to acquire Greenland, following unsuccessful discussions with Denmark characterized by “fundamental disagreement.”
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt to address the issue of Greenland, a semi-autonomous region of Denmark and a NATO ally. Prior to the talks, Trump reiterated on social media his belief that the U.S. requires Greenland for national security reasons, calling on NATO to assist in the island’s acquisition. Rasmussen described the discussions as candid and productive after the meeting concluded.
To explore alternative solutions that align with Trump’s interests regarding Greenland without a full handover, a “high-level working group” will be established.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Trump administration is willing to offer substantial financial compensation to the people of Greenland if they support the transfer of sovereignty.
Rasmussen emphasized the importance of finding a mutually agreeable way forward despite differing views, acknowledging the significance of respecting Denmark’s territorial integrity and Greenlandic self-determination. Despite the fundamental disagreement over Greenland’s future, Denmark and Greenland expressed readiness to continue engaging with the U.S.
An announcement was made to create a high-level working group to address American security concerns while upholding Denmark’s boundaries. The group is scheduled to convene for the first time in the coming weeks.
