The Acadian Credit Union located in Chéticamp, Nova Scotia, is making preparations for a merger with the East Coast Credit Union, despite some reservations within the Acadian community. This decision follows a special meeting where the board of the Acadian Credit Union recommended that its members approve the proposed merger with the East Coast Credit Union, along with the iNova and Teachers Plus credit unions. The aim is to establish a credit union network that spans the whole province.
While some members of the Acadian Credit Union have voiced concerns about potential loss of independence and the impact on Acadian communities, Daniel LeBlanc, the chair of the Acadian Credit Union, has mentioned that the merged entity will be able to provide a broader range of services to its clients. LeBlanc expressed satisfaction with the members’ favorable vote for the merger, stating that by joining a larger organization, they can enhance services for French-speaking members while preserving the unique Acadian identity and cooperative spirit valued by their members.
Voting on the merger took place from September 22 to October 2 and was open to members of all four credit unions across the province. The East Coast Credit Union reported that the voting outcome exceeded the required approval threshold of 66.67 percent. The combined credit union is anticipated to oversee assets of approximately $2 billion and cater to over 65,000 members through a network of 24 locations across Nova Scotia. The merger is scheduled to be finalized on January 1, 2027.
