Fred DeLorey, chair of NorthStar Public Affairs and a former senior party advisor, remarked on the ongoing efforts to define the essence of conservatism within the party.
Various party members have been expressing their grievances through opinion pieces, online discussions about leadership, and social media disputes involving prominent MPs. While some view this as a constructive debate on future directions, others perceive it as a reflection of the longstanding disunity that has plagued the Conservative Party of Canada since its inception.
DeLorey voiced concerns about the lack of cohesive messaging, internal discord, and the absence of strong leadership within the party. He highlighted instances where caucus members seemed to be acting independently, such as Conservative MP Jamil Jivani’s engagements with U.S. trade officials and Conservative MP Dean Allison’s hosting of an inquiry into COVID-19 vaccine-related injuries. Additionally, there have been public disagreements among party members like Leslyn Lewis and Michelle Rempel Garner.
Despite these challenges, Poilievre has refrained from publicly intervening in the internal conflicts. DeLorey interpreted this as a sign of weak caucus discipline and leadership. The party is also grappling with the diversity of conservatism across different regions, making it challenging to formulate policies that resonate nationwide.
Furthermore, there is growing resistance within Conservative circles against the influence of online personalities associated with Poilievre. This has led to criticisms from figures like Jason Kenney, who suggested that these influencers align more with the U.S.-based MAGA movement. Pollster David Coletto highlighted a significant segment of Conservative supporters who hold positive views of former U.S. President Donald Trump, indicating a deep division within the party on key issues.
The party’s struggle to appeal to a broad base, combined with internal tensions and external challenges, underscores the complexities Poilievre faces in leading the Conservative coalition. While there are calls for change within the party, the reluctance to pursue a leadership contest suggests a cautious approach among members who hope for a turnaround under Poilievre’s leadership.
