“Edmonton Marathon Apologizes for Route Error”

Two days post the Edmonton Marathon, the race organizer issues an apology following the revelation of an error in route calculations that led to the courses being longer than intended. The announcement validated the suspicions held by many participants.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Edmonton Marathon race director Tom Keogh disclosed that both the half-marathon and marathon routes were measured to be 674.7 meters longer than initially believed. Keogh expressed regret for the miscalculation, attributing it to errors in adjusting the course due to detours.

Acknowledging the mistake, Keogh took full responsibility for the error and expressed gratitude to participants who reached out with concerns. Concerns about the race distances were raised by elite and amateur runners even before the official statement was issued. Some runners claimed they had run more than the designated distance.

Despite the initial confidence in the course measurement process, an error was admitted by Keogh, who stated that the courses were accurately measured and certified on race day. Athletics Canada expressed confidence in the process but had not issued a statement regarding the updated position of the Edmonton Marathon.

The marathon was a qualifying event for prestigious races like the Boston Marathon, raising concerns for participants who aimed to meet specific time standards. Runner Mitch Walz, who had trained rigorously for the marathon, was impacted by the distance discrepancy, affecting his qualification time.

In the aftermath of the error, efforts are being made to address the issue and ensure similar mistakes are avoided in the future. The Boston Athletic Association clarified its position on accepting adjusted results based on distances run by participants.

The incident has left participants like Walz with mixed emotions, hoping for a resolution that recognizes their efforts and achievements in the marathon. Keogh assured that steps would be taken to prevent such errors from occurring again in future events.
