A fatal accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when two SUVs collided head-on along the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse. Yukon RCMP reported receiving the collision report between the Crestview area and Cousins airstrip just after 3 p.m. that day.
Tragically, one of the drivers succumbed to their injuries at the crash scene, while the other driver was taken to receive medical treatment. Yukon RCMP expressed their condolences to those affected by the incident.
The collision, situated south of the North Klondike Highway junction, prompted the temporary closure of the highway by the RCMP. Approximately 90 minutes later, one lane was reopened for traffic flow.
Responding to the scene were emergency medical services, the fire department, and the territorial Department of Highways and Public Works, in addition to the Whitehorse RCMP. By 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Yukon Protective Services confirmed that the highway had been cleared and traffic was back to normal.
A collision reconstructionist examined the scene involving a black 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and a maroon 2000 GMC Jimmy, as reported by the RCMP. An investigation is currently underway, with authorities urging potential witnesses to come forward, especially individuals who were present before the arrival of the RCMP and may have crucial information. These witnesses are encouraged to share any dashcam footage that could aid in the investigation process.
