Former Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne reflected on the outcome of Quebec’s recent election, drawing comparisons between herself and Christine Fréchette. Fréchette, the outgoing Quebec premier, resigned as leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec following their defeat in the election. The CAQ, which had been in power for eight years with 79 seats in the provincial legislature, faced a setback as the Parti Québécois secured enough seats to form a minority government in a fragmented political landscape.
Wynne noted the challenges faced by women in leadership roles, citing the phenomenon known as the “glass cliff,” where women are often entrusted with positions of power during precarious times. Drawing parallels, she shared her own experience of leading the Ontario Liberals to victory in 2014 before losing in the subsequent election to the Progressive Conservatives.
Fréchette, who took over the CAQ leadership in April, encountered difficulties in reshaping the party’s image, similar to Kim Campbell’s brief tenure as Canada’s first female prime minister. Despite Fréchette’s efforts during the electoral campaign, including addressing trade issues with the U.S., her momentum waned, leading to a decline in support after a misstep involving allegations of foreign interference.
In her resignation speech, Fréchette highlighted the limited opportunities for women in politics, expressing hope that her premiership would pave the way for more female leaders. While gender dynamics played a role in the CAQ’s defeat, political analysts also pointed to broader challenges faced by the party and its leaders. Despite Fréchette’s experience in government, she faced an uphill battle in rebranding the CAQ and ultimately succumbed to the party’s existing legacy.
The resignation of Fréchette, along with other female political leaders like Dominique Anglade, underscores the complex landscape faced by women in politics. While Fréchette’s tenure was brief, her experience sheds light on the ongoing struggles for gender equality in political leadership.
