Flights to and from Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, have recommenced following a two-day suspension due to volcanic ash from an eruption. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, and two other airports in Banten province have reopened. However, three airports, including Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung, remained closed until 10 a.m. due to the unpredictable wind direction. Aviation authorities are ensuring the safety of airports by conducting thorough inspections and cleaning processes to remove any volcanic ash residue.
Despite no traces of volcanic ash detected at some airports, the closures have been extended to allow for comprehensive maintenance of airport facilities and aircraft. The recent eruption of Anak Krakatau has caused significant disruptions, affecting a total of 2,961 flights, including 622 international flights, impacting around 341,000 passengers. Anak Krakatau volcano, which exhibited continuous activity with lava fountains and loud explosions, remains active as of Tuesday morning.
