At Chief Albert Wright School in Tulita, Northwest Territories, a water fixture has been removed from service due to elevated levels of lead detected during recent testing. The territorial government disclosed that 22 water sources, including fountains and classroom sinks, were evaluated for lead and copper content. While one water source exceeded Health Canada’s lead concentration standards, none surpassed the copper guidelines. This action follows the implementation of a new lead testing procedure for school drinking water by the territory last year, which was initiated after elevated lead levels were discovered in water at three Yellowknife schools in 2025. Officials stated that the affected water fixture at the Tulita school will undergo either replacement or installation of a filter, with subsequent testing scheduled to ensure water safety.
