A new remote testimony suite has been developed by the London Family Court Clinic to assist children involved in legal proceedings. This suite enables young individuals to provide evidence from a secure and trauma-informed environment without the need to physically attend court. Through CCTV technology, children can participate in court proceedings remotely. Joelene Bamford, the executive director of the clinic, highlighted that the primary objective is to alleviate some of the stress linked to the justice system by offering a more comfortable setting for testimony.
Research indicates that when children feel safe and less anxious, they are more likely to provide clearer and more comprehensive evidence. The use of testimonial aids like closed-circuit television has been shown to reduce stress for child witnesses, with studies suggesting that the accuracy of their testimony is either enhanced or remains unchanged compared to in-person testimony.
In addition to the remote testimony suite, the London Family Court Clinic houses the Beacon House, which serves as a Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. This dedicated space allows young individuals to interact with law enforcement in a child-friendly environment outside the formal settings of a police station or courthouse, thereby minimizing stress and retraumatization.
NSD Virgil, a specially trained facility dog at the clinic, plays a crucial role in supporting children during court proceedings and meetings with police. Virgil provides comfort and companionship, contributing to a more positive experience for the children involved.
The clinic extends its support to young individuals navigating the youth justice system by offering counseling and assessments. Regardless of their role as victims, witnesses, or accused individuals, the court system can be overwhelming for young people.
Furthermore, the London Family Court Clinic, a longstanding nonprofit organization aiding children, youth, and families in the legal system for over five decades, is organizing its second annual fundraiser, “Stronger Together: LFCC at the Met,” scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Metropolitan United Church from 7 to 9 p.m. The event aims to raise funds to sustain the clinic’s clinical services for children and youth.
