Jamila Afelom, a mother grieving the loss of her daughter Fatin Ben Homar Azizi, recalled the heartbreaking moment of identifying her daughter’s body solely by a necklace she had given her before she left. Fatin had attempted to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, and it was only a day and a half later that Afelom discovered her daughter’s lifeless body in a hospital.
Describing Fatin as bold, determined, and somewhat tomboyish, Afelom shared anecdotes of her daughter’s love for soccer. Fatin, a 26-year-old, had a passion for the sport and often showcased her skills despite skipping school to play football with friends. She had trained under Coach Adel El Kaab at Moghreb Athletic Tétouan before joining Moghreb Atletico Tanger.
El Kaab, who considered Fatin a younger sister, emphasized the significance of football as a refuge for many girls facing challenging economic circumstances. Despite his efforts to caution the players about the risks of irregular migration routes, several girls, including Fatin, ventured towards Ceuta in pursuit of a better future in Europe.
Afelom, a single mother working at a cemetery in Tétouan, reminisced about her daughter’s determination to alleviate their poverty by seeking opportunities in Europe. Fatin’s tragic fate at the hands of the perilous journey to Ceuta left Afelom shattered, with the loss compounded by the uncertain whereabouts of her surviving children in Ceuta.
The harrowing incident underscores the larger issue of youth unemployment in Morocco, reaching around 36 percent, as per Afrobarometer. El Kaab highlighted how societal pressures and the allure of a better life in Europe fuel the dreams of many young Moroccans, leading to a surge in migration attempts.
As Afelom mourns her daughter and worries about her children in Ceuta, she faces the anguish of uncertainty and the grim reality of their struggles. Despite Fatin’s unfulfilled aspirations to uplift her family from poverty, her tragic demise stands as a poignant reminder of the perils faced by migrants seeking a brighter future.
The Moroccan human rights organization AMDH reported the distressing toll of lives lost in the quest to reach Ceuta, calling for dignified identification and repatriation of the deceased. Fatin’s burial in early August marked the end of a poignant chapter, leaving behind a legacy of unfulfilled dreams and shattered hopes.
