Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham has made changes to his cabinet, particularly in Health and Community Services. Joedy Wall is now the health minister and minister of mental health and addictions, replacing his previous position as minister of social supports, housing, and poverty reduction.
Lela Evans has had one of her portfolios reassigned, with a focus on her role as minister of Labrador affairs. Wakeham expressed confidence in Evans despite earlier concerns about her multiple responsibilities. He acknowledged her past contributions and emphasized the importance of her new role.
Andrea Barbour has been replaced as tourism minister by Mike Goosney, who also serves in other key positions. Barbour’s previous work in environmental science was highlighted as a fitting background for her new responsibilities. Wakeham clarified that the decision was not influenced by past controversies but was part of a strategic direction for the future.
Chris Tibbs now oversees social supports, housing, poverty reduction, and persons with disabilities. Lloyd Parrott has taken on new roles related to red tape reduction, government services, and labor, while maintaining his existing responsibilities. The creation of the red tape reduction portfolio aims to support businesses and drive economic development.
Barry Petten now manages municipal and community affairs, community engagement, and other roles in addition to his existing duties. Craig Pardy retains his position as finance minister and takes on responsibilities for the Office of the Chief Information Officer.
Wakeham described the cabinet shuffle as a “realignment” in preparation for upcoming projects and government efficiency efforts. The changes align with the party’s commitments to improve healthcare, lower taxes, and enhance community safety.
