Ontario’s police oversight body is looking into the passing of a 41-year-old man in Thunder Bay during the Thanksgiving weekend. According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment building on May Street South and Donald Street East.
Upon arriving, officers discovered that the man in question was in distress. After learning that he was having difficulty breathing, they entered the unit and administered first aid. Emergency medical services arrived shortly after, and the man was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The SIU, an independent agency that probes incidents involving police leading to death, serious injuries, sexual assault, or firearm use, has deployed two investigators and one forensic expert to handle the case. The public is encouraged to provide any relevant information, such as videos or photos, to the lead investigator through a designated hotline or online platform.
Furthermore, the SIU extends support through its Affected Persons Program to those impacted by incidents under investigation. Individuals can access free, confidential assistance round-the-clock by calling 1-877-641-1897.
