Clever and furry thieves are outsmarting visitors at Great Blue Heron Provincial Park, located approximately 50 kilometers north of Prince Albert. Sonnet McGuire, the park’s manager, started receiving reports of missing shoes in early July. Guests discovered individual shoes abandoned in bushes, along the roadside, and even at the boat launch. The culprits behind these thefts are a group of wily foxes, known as a skulk, who seem to have developed a penchant for footwear.
McGuire mentioned that while this behavior is not entirely new, the foxes have been more active this year. Initially, the park stored the lost shoes in the campground office, but the volume of missing footwear prompted them to upgrade to outdoor storage bins. McGuire estimated that around 70 shoes were in the bin on a recent day, with potentially over 100 having passed through this summer.
The park has turned into a scavenger hunt for visitors, as shoes are being discovered all around the campground. There have been instances where foxes were spotted orchestrating thefts, with one acting as a lookout while the other snatched a shoe from a campsite before both fleeing.
Camper Brenda Andres shared an encounter with the shoe-stealing foxes, emphasizing the need to keep footwear indoors during camping trips. Meanwhile, cottager Rachelle Kelln viewed the situation as a playful game, despite finding numerous shoes on her property and nearby roads. She highlighted the diversity of stolen shoes, including flip flops, Birkenstocks, and Adidas Sambas, expressing concern over the more costly pairs.
Despite the amusement for some, McGuire cautioned visitors to safeguard their shoes indoors, as the mischievous foxes continue their thieving escapades.
