A new vibrant and immense sculpture has been added to the landscape of St. Thomas, drawing attention from passersby. Situated at the entrance of Yarmouth Yards, the city’s fresh industrial hub, stands a 25-foot, 10,000lb structure known as the Imagination Station. Reflecting the essence of St. Thomas as Canada’s Railway City, this artwork was publicly unveiled on Thursday.
Artist Briony Douglas, hailing from Toronto, is the creative mind behind the Imagination Station. During an interview with guest host Nav Nanwa on CBC Radio’s “Afternoon Drive,” she shared her vision for the sculpture and the emotions she aimed to evoke in viewers.
When asked about the experience visitors can expect at the Imagination Station, Douglas expressed her intention to ignite feelings of hope, creativity, and happiness through her colorful and nostalgic artwork. Inspired by a toy wooden train from her childhood, she crafted a design meant to transport observers to a joyous place.
Regarding the creation process, Douglas revealed that the project commenced a year ago with collaborative efforts between her and the city officials. The juxtaposition of the whimsical and vibrant sculpture against the industrial backdrop of the area intrigued her, emphasizing the impact of adding a splash of color to someone’s day.
Douglas highlighted that the Imagination Station is her first permanent public sculpture, marking a significant milestone in her artistic career. Not a stranger to monumental artworks, she recounted her past projects, including a notable hockey-themed sculpture that now resides in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The artist expressed her delight at the positive reception during the unveiling event, noting the joyous reactions from both the public and the mayor. Douglas emphasized the importance of eliciting genuine responses, particularly from children, whose unfiltered reactions serve as a source of pure feedback and inspiration for her creative endeavors.
