U.S. President Donald Trump has caused concern in the North Atlantic with his recent social media activity showcasing a map featuring the U.S. flag colors spread over the entirety of North America, encompassing Canada, Mexico, Greenland, and Iceland. This post on Truth Social did not provide any explanation, but it echoed Trump’s previous mentions of potentially making Canada the 51st state and his interest in acquiring Greenland, which is a self-governing territory of Denmark.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed unease over Trump’s actions, labeling them as inappropriate and signaling a need to curb the U.S. president’s ambitious tendencies. In response to the post, Iceland’s Foreign Secretary Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long for a meeting to convey that Iceland found the post unacceptable.
The Arctic region has been tense since Trump intensified his rhetoric earlier this year regarding U.S. control over Greenland. As the European Union reassured Greenland with promises of enhanced cooperation and substantial investments following Trump’s repeated threats, Iceland, located nearby, became anxious when Trump mistakenly mentioned their country multiple times while discussing his interests in Greenland.
Iceland, a NATO member, accelerated plans for a referendum on potential EU membership in response to the situation. Despite efforts to strengthen ties with Europe for stability, voters rejected the proposal. Additionally, a petition signed by thousands of Icelanders urged the prime minister to reject Ambassador Long after earlier remarks suggesting Iceland could become the 52nd U.S. state.
In Canada, Trump’s remarks about potentially incorporating the country as a U.S. state, initiating trade disputes, and renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” have sparked reactions. Over 225,000 Canadians have signed a petition calling for the expulsion of U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra in response to the threats. Former UN ambassador Bob Rae noted that Hoekstra’s ties to the Trump administration hinder any potential impact of expelling him.
Rae highlighted the challenges posed by the administration’s threats in renegotiating trade agreements with the U.S., emphasizing the lack of respect shown towards Canada by the current leadership. Trump’s recent suggestion to rename New Mexico as “New America” further fueled discussions over the holiday weekend.
