Ottawa’s municipal elections are gaining momentum as Rideau-Jock Coun. David Brown was recently elected by acclamation, with no other candidates submitting their names before the deadline, a first occurrence in Ottawa since 2003. Brown expressed surprise at the lack of competition for his seat, emphasizing the adrenaline and uncertainty he felt throughout the day.
Residents of Rideau-Jock, particularly in Richmond, where Brown serves, welcomed the news, viewing it as one less decision to make at the upcoming ballot. This allows them to focus more on other races such as the mayoralty and school board trustees. Heather Mortimer, a Richmond resident, expressed satisfaction with Brown’s performance, highlighting her intent to research other candidates running in the election.
Speculations arose as to why no other candidates emerged, with concerns about the treatment of politicians and the overall contentment with Brown’s representation being cited. Brown’s responsiveness to residents’ concerns was commended by constituents, reinforcing his popularity within the ward.
The agricultural community of Rideau-Jock appreciates Brown’s understanding of their needs and challenges, as noted by resident Joanna Van Gaal. Brown views his acclamation as the beginning, not the end, of his work, emphasizing the importance of continuing to address the priorities of his ward and rural Ottawa.
Despite being acclaimed, Brown plans to engage with the community through town halls and door-to-door canvassing to ensure he remains connected to their needs. Similarly, River Ward Coun. Riley Brockington, also acclaimed, remains committed to meeting constituents and sharing his platform, aiming to gather feedback from residents.
The upcoming election is scheduled for Oct. 26, with a mail-in ballot period from Sept. 1 to 15 and advance voting opportunities on Oct. 1-4 and Oct. 16. Special ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Oct. 16 to be counted.
