Jaime Wawro, while driving along Highway 39, was deeply reflecting on the tragic passing of Tanya Myers, who was shot and killed while in a moving vehicle on the same highway en route to Weyburn, Saskatchewan nearly a year ago. Approaching the anniversary of Myers’ death, Wawro felt compelled to pay tribute to her memory.
Recalling Myers’ fondness for cats, Wawro initially planned to make a personal donation to the Humane Society in her honor. However, upon discovering a sponsorship opportunity to support cat rooms at the organization, Wawro envisioned a larger initiative to involve more people in commemorating Myers’ love for feline companions.
To realize this vision, Wawro launched a GoFundMe campaign with the ambitious target of raising $30,000 to dedicate a new cat room at the expanded Weyburn Humane Society in Myers’ name. At the time of reporting, the campaign had garnered over $3,000 in donations.
In the event that the full fundraising goal is not met, the contributions will still benefit the Weyburn Humane Society, and the cat room will be named after Myers as planned, as stated on the campaign page.
Expressing her hopes for the initiative, Wawro remarked, “It will be great to have her name on that wall in one of the rooms.” The funds raised will support the cat room’s construction and the ongoing operations of the Humane Society.
Although Wawro did not know Myers personally before her death, she has since connected with Myers’ family, learning about her compassionate nature and her deep bond with both animals and people. Penny Myers, Tanya’s mother, shared that cats held a significant place in her daughter’s life, as she cared for nine cats with great attentiveness to their needs.
The overwhelming support for Wawro’s fundraiser has touched the Myers family deeply, with Penny expressing gratitude towards all donors, stating, “I’m so thankful that everyone is doing what they’re doing in memory of her.”
